The increase of building in urban areas has caused problems with increased flash flooding after sudden rain. As green belt areas are replaced by impermeable concrete or tarmac, the area loses its ability to absorb rainwater.
The idea behind SUDS is to try to replicate natural systems that use cost effective solutions with low environmental impact to drain away dirty and surface water run-off through collection, storage, and cleaning before allowing it to be released slowly back into the environment, such as into water courses. Under the new regulations (2008), planning permission is not required if you are creating a driveway where the water is directed to a lawn, border or Soakaway to drain naturally.
With the movement towards managing water on site, the easy solution is to install a drainage system so that surface water does not run onto the public road, but naturally in to the ground.
